Bites of Joy

Four Generations of Confectionery Craftsmanship Since 1939

1922
From Italy With A Dream

In 1922, 17-year-old Vincenzo Sconza arrives at Ellis Island from Italy with just $20 and a dream. He settles in Oakland and begins working in a pasta factory—determined to one day become a candy maker.

1939
The Candy Kitchen Begins

Vincenzo and his wife Maria begin making candy in their family kitchen at night. Their homemade peanut brittle quickly becomes popular in local dime stores, giving Vincenzo the confidence to leave his day job and launch Sconza Candy.

1948
The Dream Expands

As demand for Sconza candies grows, the small kitchen operation expands into a thriving family business. Vincenzo continues developing new recipes, building a loyal following throughout the Bay Area.

1960
A New Generation of Innovation

Vincenzo’s son Jim joins the family business in Oakland, helping grow Sconza Candy beyond its early roots. His ideas and energy expand the company’s offerings and lay the foundation for decades of innovation.

1990
Expanding the Brand

Sconza Candy begins expanding beyond its Bay Area roots, introducing new products and building relationships with retailers across the country. Trade shows and new packaging help bring Sconza confections to a wider audience.

2008
Moving to Oakdale

As the company grows, Sconza moves operations to a larger facility in Oakdale, California. With the third generation — Ron and Janet — now deeply involved in the business alongside Jim and Carolyn, the move marks an exciting new chapter for the family company.

2010
The Birth of a Fan Favorite

Inspired by the lemon groves of Sorrento, Italy, Sconza creates Lemoncello Chocolate Almonds to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Jim and Carolyn Sconza. The bright citrus flavor quickly becomes one of the company’s most beloved confections.

2021
A New Chapter of Growth

In 2021, President & CEO Ron Sconza leads the company into a new chapter, building on its family legacy while guiding Sconza into its next phase of innovation and growth.

2024
85 Years of Bites of Joy

Sconza celebrates 85 years of confectionery craftsmanship and introduces a refreshed brand identity, honoring its heritage while looking ahead to the future.

2025
The Fourth Generation

Max Sconza joins the family business, continuing a tradition of confectionery craftsmanship that began with Vincenzo more than eight decades earlier.
