Grand Gift Ideas for Valentine’s Day

It’s never too late to plan something special for you and your sweetheart this upcoming Valentine’s Day. Finding the perfect gift to impress your special someone can seem overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be.

Check out some of the following simple gift ideas to get started:

Valentine’s Breakfast or Brunch

If you’re short on time, planning a last-minute evening out on Valentine’s Day may not be the best way to excite your sweetheart. Reservations for romantic nights are often made weeks or even months in advance and fill up fast.

Instead, consider a different meal to make the centerpiece of your Valentine’s Day. Why not savor the morning with a Valentine’s Day breakfast or brunch? Restaurants won’t fill up quite so quickly for these meals compared to dinner, and not only are breakfast and brunch generally more inexpensive, they also allow for a full day of fun activities for you and your valentine afterward.

You can make your romantic meal even sweeter for you and your sweetheart with Sconza’s Chocolate Covered Cherry or Chocolate Fruit Basket treats.

Our Chocolate Covered Cherry treats combine smooth, sweet milk chocolate and rich white chocolate with tart, tangy, and delectable whole dried cherries for an unforgettable taste and texture. Eat them by the handful or use them to decorate chocolate cakes and cupcakes!

The Sweet Origins of Valentine’s Day

In ancient Rome, the middle of February was a time to celebrate the coming of Spring and honor Juno, the Roman goddess of love, with celebration and gifts. How did this time of joy and passion become the ubiquitous celebration of romance with cards, candy hearts, and—of course—chocolate we all know and love today?

What we know today as Valentine’s Day was originally the Feast of Saint Valentine, a feast day established by Pope Gelasius I in the 5th century to commemorate the martyrdom of Saint Valentine 200 years earlier on February 14. According to legend, Saint Valentine himself was said to have sent the first valentine’s card, signing a love letter “from your Valentine” on the eve of his martyrdom.

His feast day took on its current association with romance and gift-giving in 14th century medieval England, and some believe that its most enduring tradition—sending love letters and poems to your sweethearts—was an invention by English poet Geoffrey Chaucer in his poem The Parliament of Foules.

This idea caught on in a flash in medieval England—In fact, the oldest known valentine still in existence is a love poem written by the Duke of Orleans to his wife in 1415! Through the 1800s, the commercial mass-produced Valentine’s card industry took off in England and spread rapidly to the United States, and in the early 1900’s Hallmark Cards, Inc. was founded… and the rest, as they say, is history!

The story of chocolate’s relationship with Valentine’s Day takes a different path. Of course, chocolate was unknown to the people of Europe when most of the traditions we associate with the holiday were established, but in its native land of the Americas, it had already gained a reputation as a symbol of love. The Mayans considered hot chocolate an important part of their wedding rituals; the Aztecs considered it an aphrodisiac!

Some of these general attitudes about chocolate traveled from the New World to the Old World, where chocolate became a popular gift between nobility and royalty. In the 1800s, though, chocolate became more affordable to the masses, and Cadbury debuted their first heart-shaped boxes of chocolates for Valentine’s Day in 1861. The rest of the candy industry immediately seized on the new trend, and soon enough chocolates and Valentine’s Day became truly inseparable!

Don’t forget the Sconza chocolates for Valentines day

So long as chocolate has existed, it has been a symbol of affection, attraction, deep love, luxury, passion, and sensuality. Is it any wonder that chocolate gifts became the biggest part of Valentine’s Day?

Some scientists agree with the ancient Aztecs that chocolate has aphrodisiac properties. Chocolate contains chemicals such as endorphins that boost your mood and make you feel euphoric and other chemicals that may have some links to arousal as well, though it’s the texture and sensual experience of eating chocolate that does a lot of the heavy lifting. With all these benefits, why shouldn’t you give chocolates to someone you hold near and dear to your heart this Valentine’s Day?

Our luscious Confection Perfection chocolates are the perfect way to express your love. Our gourmet treats are available in single flavors or mix-and-match and are made to be savored and shared.
